Driving towards the End of Privacy

The concept of GPS vehicle tracking has already been mentioned on this site in the context of theft recovery and logistics management; Now in a recent article on ZDNet, Governments are proposing a mileage based taxation system that will be powered by GPS.
The prospect of a government agency tracking every move your vehicle makes should send chills down your spine. It appears that Governments around the world are spending millions of dollars to research the feasibility of mileage based taxation.

What is troubling is that mileage based taxation can be achieved through fuel taxes. If it is route based premiums that they are trying to achieve, transponders can effectively account for tolls without disclosing your location 24 hrs a day.
